Genealogy takes you down some wild paths, but this one takes the cake. Doing research on the first president revealed a wild twist: ancient Native American ancestry going back 2,000 years, tracing a migration path out of the Americas and into Europe.
Because he had no legitimate children, the system needed a workaround. They ended up labeling his cousins, my ancestors; as the Native Americans. From there, the government pushed through a ridiculous act to strip us of our ancestral home so other family members could auction off the property and a few hundred acres to the highest bidder.
The problem? Not only did they break the law when they did it, but they’ve completely refused to uphold any of our ancestors’ wills.
Fortunately, the nonprofit that the estate was eventually sold to has been on a mission to properly restore it. Thanks to their work, I was finally able to get the necessary land patent documents.
